Outer space or outer space or a space (also referred to as space), refers to a relatively empty part of the Universe, outside the atmosphere of the noun "celestial". The term space is used to distinguish it from the air space and the location of "terrestrial".

Because the Earth's atmosphere does not have clear boundaries, but consists of layers that gradually diminishing with increasing altitude, there is no clear boundary between the atmosphere and space. Altitude of 100 kilometers or 62 miles is set by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale is the definition most widely accepted as the boundary between the atmosphere and space.

In the United States, someone who is above an altitude of 80 km designated as astronauts. 120 km (75 miles or 400,000 ft) marks the boundary where atmospheric effects become apparent during the process of re-entering the atmosphere (re-entry). (See also the Karman line).
